The Indian Mutiny

Major-General Richard Hilton

The Indian Mutiny was one of the most pivotal events in British Colonial history. An uprising against the East India Company came within a hair’s breadth of ending British Rule in India entirely, but through will and force of arms, the day was saved.

Written exactly 100 years after the events, The Indian Mutiny, a Centenary History provides the full history of the Indian Mutiny, focusing on the key events and the main characters on both sides, bringing this critical event in British colonial history back to life. Originally published in 1957.

Written by the author of Imperial Obituary and The Thirteenth Power.

The North-West Frontier

Major-General Richard Hilton

The North-West Frontier, A True Story for Boys, provides a history of one of the most remote regions of the British Empire, the North-West Frontier (the modern-day border between Pakistan and Afghanistan). Major-General Richard Hilton provides an exciting and digestible history of this region and of the British colonialism in India, seeking to answer “Why were we there?” and “What good did we do?”.

Major-General Richard Hilton himself served in the British Army in this region for twelve years and was therefore intimately familiar with the region and its people.  The North-West Frontier was originally published in 1957. This book was written for a target group between ages 8 and 14, and as such is written in a simpler language than Richard Hilton’s other books, but it still provides an exciting story for all ages. The book also comes with illustrations, which have been restored by S. D. Smith.

Written by the author of Imperial Obituary and The Thirteenth Power.

On the Art of Reading

Arthur Quiller-Couch

In 1920, prolific literary critic Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944) gave twelve lectures on this question, informed by his experience establishing the English Tripos course at Cambridge. How does the reading of literature help us better understand the spiritual element of man? What should children read? How do we choose what to read, out of countless options? What makes a work of literature a ‘masterpiece’? Sir Arthur confronts these and other questions that many diligent readers have asked themselves at some time. Rich with edifying instruction, "On the Art of Reading" is a marvelous guide for lovers of English literature who wish to graduate from passive to active reading.
